Discover the various ways you can make a difference in the lives of the children we support by volunteering with Horizon Sports Club.
The Club is unique as it offers the opportunity to gain an invaluable insight into living with disability. Some of our volunteers have direct experiences which they are able to share with others. For most, however, this is an important window into how disability can affect an individual, their siblings and parents. It also highlights the importance of exercise for well-being. At Horizon we believe that every child can participate regardless of level and this is proven time and time again.
Here’s what some of our volunteers say about supporting Horizon Sports Club: http://bit.ly/33j6d06
Club members form great bonds with their volunteers as they put their trust in them to help them get the best out of the various activities at the Club.
Assistant Coaches support our members at the classes enabling them to get the most out of the session they are participating in. Volunteer Assistants might provide one to one support or provide a more general role in the session. The club provides a mandatory bespoke ‘Horizon Volunteer Induction training’ course. Topics of the 3-hour course include: safeguarding; communicating with young people with a disability; health and safety; and defusing aggression. Attendees will learn how to assess risk, respond safely to an emergency and provide practical support to the coach in the event of an accident, injury or illness. All participants will receive a certificate of attendance. Student Volunteer Assistants will also receive on-going in-house training organised by the Operations Manager at varying times of the year.
You don’t have to have any previous experience to volunteer for us, you just need a love of sport, be able to share that enthusiasm with others and make sure that our members are having as much fun as possible! Our members and Coaches really value the support that’s given and it helps create the amazing club we have.
Ideally our volunteers stay for at least 2 years and we recruit students from local schools age 14-18. This provides stability for our members and helps the volunteer really gain from their experiences with the Club.
If you would like to volunteer with us please email us at volunteer@horizonsportsclub.org.uk
Our members and younger volunteers benefit greatly by having adult volunteers. Life experiences and a calm head (!) provide great learning opportunities for everyone.
If you have a passion for one of our sports and would like share that with children and young people, please email us at volunteer@horizonsportsclub.org.uk and we will be in touch.
It is important to recognise exceptional volunteering. All our volunteers are AMAZING however some go ‘above and beyond‘ and the Annual Volunteer Awards recognise this across each sport offered at the Club. Recipients receive a Certificate and (usually) a voucher to spend as they wish.
Horizon Sports Club aims to make a tremendous impact on children and their families by providing a safe and supportive environment for learning new skills, making friends, and feeling a sense of belonging.
